Tasked with consulting on Discovery's DTC Project "Discovery+" to advise them on UI and Interaction Design for Smart TV platforms.

After completing my projects with Eurosport I offered a role to work on Discovery’s biggest international project. A project with the aim to join all the different Apps and Channels into one space. This project was called DiscoveryPlus.

I had explored in depth the Eurosport brand, worked helped to bring it to new platforms and audiences I was asked to join a new US based team with the aim of looking after their UI and Interaction Design needs for Connected devices such as tvOS and XBox plus a catalogue of others.

The Opportunity was huge, a chance to shape and be part of a project that would bring together 18 channels and remove the need for the user to install up to 18 Go style apps. The aim was simplicity and task was design the micro interactions.

I was primarily brought in because of my conversational design experience and platform thinking for Google Assistant and Alexa. DiscoveryEurosport in partnership with Amazon’s aim was to bring a Omni-channel experience to Eurosport users. Where I cam in was the handle the Echo Platform, which comprises of Smart Speakers, SmartDisplays and SmartTV’s to enable users to watch the Daily Highlight show and keep up with where each country medal total plus bring Athlete key information at moment nice by just asking Alexa, tell me about Usain Bolt.

Coupled with that I was asked to take control and design the Olympics Eurosport experience. This entitled mainly a re-skin of current content but also introducing a New Profile idea to switch between different content profiles. Such as Eurosport and Olympic content.

Since DiscoveryEurosport was very new to the Voice space, before Starting any Custom skills. My aim was to educate them on the system, terms, philosophy of Voice-fist platforms,

The different Voice modes and Skill types were particularly difficult to explain since for the enduser Alexa sounds, looks and feels all. After organising Workshops to intro the team could we start exploring ideas and possible conversations and functionality.

Many conversations and ideations sessions started on whiteboards, paper and pens. Explaining how turn really works, trying to get them to learn about Audio design and the power of words, plus simple rules to create more engaging audio experiences. At all times I tried to get Editorial to partake in the idea sessions, which really helped Product understand the content. We followed the “How Might We” method, and Crazy 8 to bring ideas out.  Filling I fleshed out the key functionality that would answer the brief that I was set out. 

The left, prototype, works on TV and with Remotes. The aim was design the flow of the TV screen plus demo this stack-holders. The Prototype on the right hand side demos how a TV rail can work and interact with content above.

Taking the time to design with hardware in mind raises opportunity to be creative within the space. I use the various TV remotes while designing allow me to explain what I have in mind to others.

Designing for Google ChromeCast

Chromecast is a technology that allows Android, iOS, and Chrome web apps to “stream” content — like video, audio and screen sharing (mirroring) — to Cast-ready devices like:

  • Chromecast
  • Chromecast audio
  • Chromecast built-in TV (also known as TV with Chromecast built-in)
  • Chromecast built-in Speakers (also known as Speakers with Chromecast built-in)

In the Cast interaction model, the mobile phone, tablet or laptop is the sender which acts as a remote control to control the playback, and the TV is the receiver which receives instructions from the sender and displays the content from the receiver’s Internet connection. All the user action (taps and swipes) takes place on the sender device rather than on the TV.

Casting relies on the coordination between two or more screens; the sender UI and the receiver UI — they must work together. For example, if you press a button on a mobile device to pause the content, the TV should indicate that it is paused, while the mobile device should provide a play button to resume playback.
